BOE begins to build its Gen 6 LTPS/AMOLED production line in Chengdu

On May 8, BOE’s Gen 6 LTPS/AMOLED production line in Chengdu, the company’s second semiconductor display line in the city, commenced in the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

The new production line is intended to produce high-end mobile phone panels and new displays for mobile devices. It has a design capacity of 45,000 (1.85m×1.5m) glass substrates per month and is expected to come into operation in the second quarter of 2017.

LTPS and the traditional a-Si are both backplane technologies. The biggest difference between them is that the electron mobility in LTPS is over 100 times higher than that in a-Si. That explains why LTPS displays have a higher resolution than the maximum resolution of a-Si products, namely 625 PPI. LTPS can also give small-sized products a 4K resolution. In addition, LTPS products respond fast so images change at a higher speed and shift more smoothly, with low power. High-resolution smart phones are increasing popular and the average size of their screens has been on the rise. In such a context, LTPS technology has more advantages in producing large- and medium-sized, high-resolution products, including the iPhone and MAC series that have been upgraded constantly.

According to industry analysts, BOE has two LTPS/AMOLED production lines in Ordos and Chengdu. Both of them lead the industry by technology and scale. They are even one year or two years ahead of Taiwan and Japanese display makers in small- and medium-sized wearable OLED applications. The completion of the Gen 6 line in Chengdu will improve BOE’s competitiveness in high-end display products and meet the growing demand for small-sized high-performance display products.

According to NPD DisplaySearch, with the popularity of high-resolution smart phones, the average size of LTPS panels for smart phones will increase from 4.9 inches to 5.5 inches from 2014 to 2020. During the same time, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the demand for LTPS panels will reach was 19.9%. Specifically, the CAGR of the demand for LTPS LCD panels and LTPS AMOLED panels will be 18% and 23.7% respectively. The market will stay at a high level of growth.
